CUBO - 1981

acciaio inox, colore nitro | 170x170x170

The Cube of 1981 won the first prize in a competition for the new Migros high-rise building in the centre of Zurich. The sculpture was originally destined for the interior. Later Migros decided to place the Cube in the park overlooking the lake next to the Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute in Rüschlikon. The minimised Cube is the epitome of a sculpture in the round. It offers new formal expressions from every angle without any preference. In addition, the cube is defined and deconstructed in a progressive tension created by a simple right-angle corner tube which rises vertically towards the horizontal diagonal and descends in a diagonal twisted in two directions down to the base. A stereo-metric irritation is evoked by the seeming logic of the square tube joined neatly at each corner until it rejoins the square base unexpectedly in a rhombic ending.
